Review: In Love of Honey, Money...and My Virgin Passport by Mita Jain

How I came to Know about The Book: From Goodreads. It was for an ARR request that I read the book.

Format of The Book: ebook (pdf).

Genre: Contemporary, Indian Fiction

Length of The Book: 205 pages (for pdf version).

A Short Synopsis: Let’s play a game. I say a word, and you think of the next few words that flash in your mind.

Hyderabad –
Bangalore –
Gurgaon -
Mysore –
Pune –

Did something click in your mind? Is there something common about all these places? If so, you already know what this book is about: the very iconic software a.k.a. IT industry.

Is this industry really a way to easy & money-minting job? Maybe yes. Maybe no. What do you say? Perhaps, Vinay can help you decide. (Goodreads Page).

Characters of The Book: Vinay, Loveleena, Cyrus, Farheen, Rajlakshmi, Nikhila, Paramjeet, Samar, A.D., Sunanda Khare, Anoop, Vishnu, Karthik, Khushi.

My Review: Vinay, a fresh graduate in IT opts for a stable and secure job in the software industry. He tries to formulate success
and at the same time balance his professional and personal lives. This book speaks of the hurdles, achievements, feelings
and deeds of Vinay, a simple yet aspiring, nervous yet intelligent and industrious guy. This is a story of his getting into
the industry, knowing the industry, his success and struggles out there, and his notion of love and life.

Campus placements, training period, project allocation, team work, party nights, on-bench period, getting involved in a
project, office-politics, KT-sessions, late night works, salary SMS, work pressure, irresponsible colleagues and
every other thing out there is a part of this book. These are things supposed to happen to most IT professionals in the
first few years. Everyone from IT industry would be able to relate himself with Vinay or at least some of his colleagues among Cyrus, Paramjit, Samar, Rajlakshmi or Nikhila. Mita's way of describing the events and the characters is
simple and yet distinct. The style of narrating is lucid and quite enjoyable. Every character from Vinay to Samar is very
much visible to us.The light yet meaningful quotes and the witty humour have made it a good read, indeed.

In his engineering days, Loveleena had been his best friend and a constant support. Meanwhile he gets placed in a renowned software company and shifts to Hyderabad
along with some of his class mates who were placed in the same company. But soon he realizes surviving and succeeding in the
industry is not an easy task. He tries to make a place of his own in the industry amidst office politics and others conspiracy.
And between this hustle and bustles, he realizes his love for Leena, and conveys his feelings. After crossing a few more
barrier of difficulties, he gets an onsite project and a good team to work with. The team succeeds and he gets a good
recognition within his company. Finally gathering lots of experience in a year, he returns to India. He sees his own reflection
in the new recruits of the company, sees history to repeat itself.

Liebster Award: Questions and Nominations

As I've stated before, my blog has been nominated for the Liebster Award.
You can find it in my previous blog post here.
If you're not familiar with the Liebster Award, you may get some helpful information here.

The rules are simple as follows:
  • Link back to the blogger to nominated your name.
  • Answer the questions of the blogger who nominated you.
  • Nominate 10 other bloggers of your choice and inform them.
  • Prepare your own set of 10 questions and post it on your blog for the nominees (nominated by you).
  • And you're done!
I've been nominated by Sofia from Take A Walk On The Write Side and I want to thank her heartily for nominating my blog.

Sofia's Questions and My Answers To Them:

  • What made you decide to start blogging?
Answer: I was ever so curious about blogging and the authors behind those blog posts! I used to follow some blogs even before I started blogging myself and always wanted to have a blog of my own. But since I've joined Goodreads this year (in July, I guess), I've been seen lots of bloggers and my will for creating my own blog increased a lot more. I wanted to have my personal canvas to display and discuss about the books I've read or I'll be reading and so the idea of creating a book blog seemed absolutely perfect. That's why I started my blog Books Are My Best Friends.
  • From where do you usually get your books (library, local bookstore, amazon..)?
Answer: I love to buy books as physical books, for me, have their own essence (you can touch them, smell them.. umm, it's a great feeling to have new books added to your bookshelf). But virtual or ebooks are something you just can't avoid. So yes, I get my ebooks from amazon, smashword, tuebl (it's absolutely amazing!) and many more sites. And also I borrow books from the library.
  • What book has influenced your current tastes the most?
Answer: Divergent by Veronica Roth (the whole series). I loved it so much that I started reading a lot more dystopian novels.
Apart from that The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho had a remarkable influence on me, my way of thinking.
  • What's your favourite thing about blogging so far?
Answer: I love everything about blogging, honestly! It feels great to share my thoughts and to see others sharing theirs. The exciting part is, of course, whenever I get a new follower or a new comment!
  • Have you ever read a book that you wish you had written? If yes, which one?
Answer: There are so many! Every time I read a good book, I feel like "why cant I write something as beautiful as this!" But if I've to choose one, I'll pick The Alchemist. It was wonderful and I wish someday I'll write something so meaningful and thought provoking.
  • What's the one thing you can't stand in a book?
Answer: Unrealistic plot and imitation of some other book! I hate both.
  • Do you have any weird reading habits?
Answer: Weird? I'm not sure if it counts but when I'm reading on an e-reader, I highlight so many lines and take so many notes (so that I can use them for reviews), like you can't imagine so many!!
  • Which fictional character do you identify the most?
Answer: It requires a lot of thinking for answering this sort of question and I did think for quite a long time to find a suitable answer. I identify myself with Jacqueline from Easy by Tammara Webber, to a great extent.
  • Favourite book(s)?
Answer: The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars, The Alchemist, Biswasghatak, Life of Pi, The Mortal Instruments, Vampire Academy and the list will go on!
  • What's your favourite book adaptation (in any media: movies, TV, theater..)?
Answer: As TV series- Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries and as movie- Life of Pi, The Godfather. (I havent watched City of Bones yet but wish to watch it ASAP).

My Questions for the bloggers I've nominated:

  • When did you start blogging and why?
  • Tell us briefly about your blog and what do you do over there?
  • What you love most about blogging?
  • How do you promote your blog? Whenever there's a new post, how do you connect people and let them know about your blog?
  • What is the most interesting thing that has happened to you during the course of blogging?
  • What do you think is the most challenging part about blogging?
  • What are your top 5 favourite books? Name some of your favourite authors.
  • Besides blogger are you on any other blogging social networks? If yes, which one do you prefer most and why?
  • Your favourite blog that you follow (choose one)?
  • Lastly, any tips for fellow bloggers?

Sunday Series #1

Sunday Series is another weekly meme, to be posted on Sundays, dedicated to the several books belonging to a series of books.
Since majority of the Young Adult, New Adult, Paranormal Romance, Contemporary, Dystopia (any other genres too) books are written as series, I thought arranging all books of a particular series in one place will be helpful and nice!
Each week I'll post about one series (I'll pick it randomly) and will post about all the books of the series. My post will include the author bio and short synopsis of each book. Hope you, my readers, will find it interesting! :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the first week of this self-invented meme, I'll go for one of the very popular series!! Guess which one? Well, here it goes -->

And Hanna's obsession with looking flawless is literally making her sick. But the most horrible secret of all is something so scandalous it could destroy their perfect little lives.
And someone named "A" is threatening to do just that.
At first they thought A was Alison, their friend who vanished three years ago . . . but then Alison turned up dead. So could A be Melissa, Spencer's ultracompetitive sister? Or Maya, who wants Emily all to herself? What about Toby, the mysterious guy who left town right after Alison went missing?
One thing's for certain: A's got the dirt to bury them all alive, and with every crumpled note, wicked IM, and vindictive text message A sends, the girls get a little closer to losing it all.

Lucky me. I know these pretty little liars better than they know themselves. But it's hard keeping all of their secrets to myself. They better do as I say . . . or else!
Average rating on Goodreads: 4.10/5,   30508 ratings.

  • Unbelievable (Book 4):
Published: 2008, 36 editions.

Synopsis: Behind Rosewood's grand facades, where the air smells like apples and Chanel No. 5 and infinity pools sparkle in landscaped backyards, nothing is as it seems. It was here, back in seventh grade, that five best friends shared everything--Seven jeans, MAC makeup, and their deepest, darkest secrets. For Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily, it was a dream come true . . . until Alison, the most beautiful of them all, suddenly vanished.

Now someone named A has turned their charmed lives into a living nightmare. Emily has been shipped off to her hyper-conservative cousins in Iowa. Aria is stuck living with her dad and his home-wrecker girlfriend. And Spencer fears she had something to do with Alison's murder. But Hanna's fate is far worse than all of that--she's clinging to life in the hospital, because "she knew too much."

With A's threats turning dangerous and Ali's killer still on the loose, the girls must uncover the truth--about A, about Ali, and about what happened to Hanna--before they become A's next victims. But as they unravel Rosewood's mysteries and secrets, will it bring an end to the horror . . . or is this just the beginning?

Average rating on Goodreads: 4.15/5,   27766 ratings.

  • Pretty Little Secrets (Book 4.5):
Published: 2012, 11 editions.

Synopsis: Rewind to junior year in Rosewood, Pennsylvania, to a winter break no one has ever heard about. . . .

Fat snowflakes fall onto manicured lawns, quilted stockings hang over marble fireplaces, and everyone is at peace, especially Hanna, Emily, Aria, and Spencer. Now that Alison’s murderer is in jail and A is dead, they can finally relax. Little do they know there’s a new A in town. . . .

Rule number one of being an effective stalker: Get to know your prey. So I watch these liars day and night, keeping an eye on the trouble they get into, the messes they make, and the secrets they keep. Hanna’s desperate for a very personal session with her gym trainer. Emily is number one on Santa’s naughty list. Aria’s old flame from Iceland is about to land her in hot water. And Spencer’s resorting to some backhanded tactics to get what she wants.

What happens on holiday break stays on holiday break—right? But guess what. I saw. And now I’m telling.

Taking place between "Unbelievable" and "Wicked," "Pretty Little Secrets" is a very special "Pretty Little Liars" tale revealing the liars’ never-before-seen misadventures over their junior-year winter break.

Average rating on Goodreads: 3.89/5,   4081 ratings.

  • Wicked (Book 5):

Now that Ali's killer is finally behind bars, the girls think they're safe. But those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. And they should know by now that I'm always watching. . . .

Average rating on Goodreads: 4.12/5,   23743 ratings.

  • Killer (Book 6):
Published: 2009, 25 editions.

Synopsis: In picture-perfect Rosewood, Pennsylvania, ash-blond highlights gleam in the winter sun and frozen lakes sparkle like Swarovski crystals. But pictures often lie— and so do Rosewood's four prettiest girls.
Hanna, Aria, Spencer, and Emily have been lying ever since they became friends with beautiful Alison DiLaurentis. Ali made them do terrible things—things they had to keep secret for years. And even though Ali was killed at the end of seventh grade, their bad-girl ways didn't die with her.
Hanna's on a mission to corrupt Rosewood's youth, starting with a very attractive sophomore. Aria's snooping into her boyfriend's past. Spencer's stealing— from her family. And pure little Emily's abstaining from abstinence.
The girls should be careful, though. They thought they were safe when Ali's killer was arrested and A's true identity was finally revealed. But now there's a new A in town turning up the heat. And this time Rosewood is going to burn.

Average rating on Goodreads: 4.15/5,   24259 ratings.

The friends insist they’re telling the truth, but all of Rosewood thinks they’re just out for attention—and nobody likes a girl who cries wolf. So when the big bad killer comes after them, will anyone believe the girls. . . or will they be the next to disappear?
Average rating on Goodreads: 4.18/5,   19967 ratings.

  • Wanted (Book 8):
Published: 2010, 17 editions.

SynopsisIn Rosewood, majestic estates sprawl for acres, and Tiffany toggle bracelets dangle from every girl's wrist. But not all that glitters is gold, and the town harbors secrets darker than anyone could imagine—like the truth about what really happened the night Alison DiLaurentis went missing. . . .

Back in middle school, Ali plucked Emily, Hanna, Aria, and Spencer from obscurity and turned them into the beautiful, popular girls everyone wanted to be. Ali was the best friend they ever had. But she also made them do terrible things and taunted them with their worst secrets. Now, three years later, all their questions about Ali have finally been answered and they can put this awful chapter of their lives behind them. Or so they think.

Not every story has a happy ending, especially when four pretty little liars have done so many wicked things. In the dramatic conclusion of Sara Shepard's bestselling Pretty Little Liars series, Emily, Hanna, Aria, and Spencer could get everything they've ever wanted—unless A has one more horrifying twist in store.

Aria’s jealous of her boyfriend’s new exchange student. Spencer’s getting a little too cozy with her soon-to-be-stepbrother. Hanna’s one scandalous photo away from ruining her dad’s Senate campaign. And Emily will do anything to get a swim scholarship.

Worst of all: Last spring break in Jamaica, they did something unforgivable. The girls are desperate to forget that fateful night, but they should know better than anyone that all secrets wash ashore … eventually.

Aria's love life is on the fritz. Emily's exploring her wild side. Hanna's kissing the enemy. And someone from Spencer's past--someone she never thought she'd see again--is back to haunt her.

But none of that compares to what happened last spring break. It's their darkest secret yet and guess who found out? Now A is determined to make them pay for their crime, and the only thing scarier than A is the fear that maybe, just maybe, they deserve what's coming to them.

Emily digs into Ali's past at the mental hospital with some very crazy consequences. Spencer contacts a private eye to help her stalk her stalker. I loved how the author took a different approach to writing a love story in modern times with the paranormal element present. I thought it was absolutely wonderful and refreshing. Marvelous!” Kathy H (Amazon Reviewer)

I will admit I scoffed at the way it started but in the end I had fallen in love with this story…completely untraditional it was a very original idea, not to mention modern. This story had such a good plot and the story structure was sound. Kacii – The Kooky Bookworm (Book Blogger)

About the Author

Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.

Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

***Excerpt***

Happy with the amount of photos I had collected I started to head back out of the forest, still flicking through my shots. As well as close ups, I had taken a few landscapes and as I was almost at the edge of the forest I noticed something in one of the photographs that made me stop.
In the left hand corner was a figure that looked mostly human, but was blurred as if they were moving on the spot.
A cold shudder shot through me.
Looking over my shoulder I became slightly panicked and felt as if someone was following me.
My eyes flicked and searched the shadows. Even though there was no sign that anything had ever been behind me, the forest looked different now - dark and threatening.
Instinctively I broke away and ran, still clutching the camera that was displaying the freaky image. Surrounded by trees I didn’t stop until I was free of the forest and back in the open light and sight of my house.
Throwing open my door, I slumped against the inside of it, regaining my breath from the short sprint. Once I had recovered I looked down at the photo once more, just to make sure that I hadn’t been seeing things. The old saying “the camera never lies,” came into my mind and for the first time I wished it not to be true. Sure enough though, as I looked down at the screen, the figure was still there and this time I noticed a red and orange glow around where its feet should have been. The image almost looked like the person was on fire but I thought I would have surely noticed if there had been a burning man in front of me.
